food & friendly people

Wed, 02/23/2011 - 21:00 -- Bee

The entire staff of the local posh food store greets me by name (first and last) although I have been there merely half a dozen times.

I suspect they are being "friendly." I find the experience "alarming."

This is partly cultural: customer service in England is sparse, to say the least, and in Cambridge you could describe shop clerks as antagonistic. The folks at Bacchanalia and the farm store were the only amiable people I encountered on a daily basis, but they certainly never knew my name. Or at least, they didn't use it.

There was a time when I would have refused cosmetic surgery as a political gesture, but lately that philosophical stance just seems like a different kind of vanity.

I would certainly never undertake any sort of elective surgery, for any reason. I don't understand how anyone would take the risk, especially not in service to transient notions of beauty. Even if I cared about appearances, I've had too many post-operative complications following necessary and urgent procedures.

Marisa is a good friend, dependable, steady, perceptive, patient. She is the secular equivalent of a godparent to my children, the executor of my estate, an esteemed honorary member of the family. She is there if I need someone to listen, or a ride, or a friend to fly to the other side of the world and just hang out. And I would do the same for her. We don't talk much, because we don't need to; our friendship occupies a space beyond performance.

First impressions of Texas: cars, big cars, old cars, old big cars, then some trucks. With confrontational bumper stickers and gun racks? You betcha.

However, the weather is cool and grey - much more to my liking even if this is a temporary respite - and I feel much better, I promise, no really. And I'm not being facetious for once, the random flare of icktastic illness has abated. As predicted. Maybe I was just allergic to California? Shrug. These matters are beyond boring.

Since 1988, no matter where I am in the world - from Tacoma to Olympia, London to NYC - I just have to think "I wonder what Karl T. Steel is up to right now...." And hey presto! There he is!

I have too many commitments to see friends this week, let alone on my anniversary, but how could I ignore the startling coincidence that KTS once again showed up improbably nearby?

Anniversary

Fri, 01/07/2011 - 21:00 -- Bee

Today we decided to go to Malibu and live out our Rockford Files fantasies. Except, you know, the car.

In theory this was our anniversary, but of what exactly? It has been fifteen years since we rocked up at the 24 Hour Church of Elvis, got hit with a magic wand, signed some papers, accidentally ended up on the evening news. Though in my view that was simply the day we scammed a discriminatory system, the day I became officially eligible for health insurance.

The only vows we took, the only promise I could have made given the distrait circumstances? To remain friends.

Wise

I've never believed people can change; circumstances, yes, people, no. We are what we are from birth until death, and people tell you everything you need to know within five minutes of meeting. Yes, experience can temper attitude, people mature or deteriorate, but beyond that?

It is wise to listen to the stories people tell. Whether truthful or fiction, the future of your relationship is all contained in the introduction.

Pie

Tue, 11/23/2010 - 07:45 -- Bee

The big day is here - strictly family invited this year - drum roll please:

We have achieved pie. And it isn't even 2am yet!

Other fixins are stacked in the fridge preparatory for an early start. 5kg turkey? £54. And a bargain at that! Because, remember, turkey is not a November bird. . . we Americans stranded in Europe this week have to cajole out of season slaughter.

Honour

Somewhere in the muddle of moving my daughter received a package from her paternal grandparents. The contents included copies of the videos they shot when we all lived in the same town.

I was pleased to sit down with my grown-up child and watch the scenes of her evolving life, from a tiny little mewling scrap of a human to the robust and fleet-footed wonder she became. She was an exceptional and entertaining child; we had wild fun all the time, adored each other completely. I am hugely thankful someone recorded those moments.
