supporters of choice, here's your chance to speak up NOWA COPY OF AN EMERGENCY EMAIL I RECEIVED FROM PLANNED PARENTHOOD: Right now, Congress is considering an amendment to the health care reform bill that will eliminate choice for millions of women. Call your representative now and ask him or her to oppose the Stupak amendment! Dear Miss Phoenix, I'm writing to you with an urgent request. Late yesterday, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops met with leaders in the House of Representatives in their bid to eliminate women's access to abortion care under health care reform. We have just received news that their efforts are working, and Representative Bart Stupak has introduced an amendment to the health care reform bill that will result in women losing health care coverage for abortion. We urgently need you, and your friends and family, to call your representative. Call Paul Hodes, at (202) 225-5206 and ask him or her to reject the Stupak amendment that will remove abortion coverage from health care reform. After you call, just reply to this message and let us know how it went. If the bishops and their anti-choice partners in the House succeed, they'll permanently alter health care in America, even taking away benefits from women that they have today. The bishops want to effectively eliminate abortion coverage in both private plans and the public option. We simply cannot stand for such a discriminatory, mean-spirited attack on women. It's a chilling ultimatum: eliminate choice for millions of women, or the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops will do all they can to kill health care reform. This is a true crisis for American women, and we need you to act now. Call your representative at (202) 225-5206 and tell him or her to reject this attack on women's health — and then forward this message to your friends, your family, everyone you know and ask them to do the same (and don't forget to post the news to Facebook, Twitter — everywhere). We need you now, more than ever. Thank you for standing strong with us in the face of this vicious last-minute attack on women. We will keep you posted on what's next. Sincerely, Cecile Richards, President * * * For more information about exactly what the Stupak Amendment entails, planned parenthood's press release is really informative: http://www.plannedparenthood.org/about-us/newsroom/press-releases/planne... I made the call, and I was assured that the representative from my state (Paul Hodes, Dem) will be voting in opposition to this amendment, and he will be responding to my concern with either a phone call or a written letter after the vote. If this is something that matters to you mamas then make a call NOW: this amendment would strongly limit (even kill) choice for women, especially poor women. Here's a link where you can click on your state and get a number where you can make a call right now to voice your strong opposition: http://www.visi.com/juan/congress/

so yeah.
the amendment was accepted as part of the bill, in a vote of 220-215. fuck us silly.
I called
I was really happy to talk to a live operator at my congresswoman's office who said she was steadfastly against the amendment.
We also talked about a recent town hall / roundtable meeting with my rep and Nancy Pelosi, and he seemed really well informed. I am glad I took the time and called.

i was impressed
with how pleasant and well-informed the man who took my call was. it's not that i expected them to be outright rude or anything, i just didn't expect them to be so well-prepared and considerate of our purpose, you know? i'm glad you called, sunflower...thanks!
ah, but the important thing...
is the $750 fine for people who can't afford an insurance plan still in there? cuz you know, we have to hold someone accountable.
i kid.
this bill is irreparable. it needs to be shot down. it won't be. it will be tweaked and our rights chipped away, concessions will be made even though "they" (democrats) allegedly have a majority and are of one mind on this. it just needs to be killed. it doesn't have public support.
gotta love a corporate-run government. in a special saturday session no less!

wait, i'm not kidding,
i didn't even realize that was in there!! yeah, this amendment blows for sure, but i honestly didn't know that an exact fine was in this version of the bill-- which makes the amendment a sidenote anyway because the bill itself is fucked. i need to pay more fucking attention! where can i find a full version of the bill to read??
oh yeah
someone's got to crack down on those burdens to society. you know, the ones whose income are equal to or less than their expenses. and let's not forget those who believe it's unconstitutional the government to force citizens to purchase goods and services from private companies. we won't learn unless we're "hit where it hurts --- in the pocketbook!"
but it won't be shot down. the show will go on. we will be told we have no choice, that it's the best they can do, that compromises are inevitable because the alternative is worse. and people will buy it, sadly, because people are stupid.
what everyone is forgetting:
medical care is NOT the same as insurance policies
all the insurance polices being discussed, even the subsidized ones, are private corporations. (who by the way donated a shit-ton to the obama campaign, and the clinton one too)
the opposition to this is that people, medical patients, pay their practitioners for services rendered, leaving financial institutions out of the transaction.
the compromise to that is:
the single payer health care system, where a government run payer covers medical costs, and regulates the costs (as opposed to what we have now which is vast-scale racketeering and price fixing by the corporations)
the compromise to THAT is:
what is now known as "the public option"
the democrats, who have a majority which may or may not be filibuster proof are in a position of supreme power right now. what happens with this bill is EXACTLY what they want to happen. republicans are over a barrel. the democrats, with this ultimate power, have compromised already on three levels. and now when this fails they will come to us and tell us we have to give up that public option to get "health care for all."
they're lying.
they want money.
they want to fine us.
and they want to please their corporate puppeteers.
i said it many times already, but i'm saying it again. i'm never voting democrat again. at least with republicans you know you're getting fucked.
asses.
not that i have strong opinions about it or anything.
