in the summer of 2000, i was a legal observer {someone who is supposed to bear witness to and record the {mis}behavior of police/authorities at protests} for a solidarity protest in detroit during the OAC {organization of american states} meetings across the river in windsor, canada, and the detroit police did targeted, mass, pre-emptive arrests of local activists; the city of detroit limited the protest site to one block - not even one square block - one block that ended at the river, and there were police on the street five deep on either side {looking scared as hell 'cuz they'd been shown training films that vehemently asserted the protesters were out to kill them}, coast guard boats in the river {in case we decided to swim to canada?}, plain clothes officers in the crowd trying their square-assed damndest to incite violence {i shit you not}, and fucking SNIPERS on the rooftops all along the block and in a couple of police helicopters circling. the city of detroit spent FIVE MILLION dollars on policing that protest, and this was BEFORE 9/11 and before w's first coup. the u.s. has been getting scarier and fuckin' scarier for a long while now.
