Thrush

Submitted by BeforeDreaming on Sat, 08/30/2008 - 2:27pm.

Jonah has it and I have no experience to draw on. His doctor's office is closed for the weekend.
What now?
Is there anything I can pick up at the health food store?
I'm BFing, I assume I have to "treat" my boobs.
Thanks!!!

I had the worst. case. of. thrush... ever.
I've had it before when I was nursing and gentian violet worked. I tried it this time, didn't work. Tried everything under the sun - grapefruit seed extract (that helped a little), I don't even remember what else, but every natural remedy out there. I had it for months and it sucked - so itchy and uncomfortable, cracked and bleeding nipples... I posted here for help, etc.
Sadly, I eventually had to turn to a doctor for help and got put on some antifungal medicine. It didn't work (after 6 weeks!). SO, then I got a prescription for some $50 antifungal cream (I have health insurance too!). I think that stuff worked - or else that medicine finally kicked in after I stopped taking it... I don't know but it went away thank god!!!
Remember to change your bra/shirts (whatever touches your nipples) everyday and wash again before wear.
This isn't to freak you out, I hope it didn't. ere is the link to when I posted about it so long ago:

Good luck! I think if you handle this right away that it won't get out of control like mine...

Hopefully this icky Nystatin will do the trick. Jonah has a mouthful but my nips seem sorta ok right now. They are sore when he nurses, but not red or cracked (yet, fingers crossed). I couldn't get a pharmacist to hook me up with just plain Nystatin powder, somethng about medicaid not covering it. Super bummer. I know what you mean WR, As a nurse, we give this pink sticky stuff to our patients all the time and it only works in about half of the cases.
Once I get paid, I'm going to try grapeseed and some plain acidophilus powder.
Thanks for all of your help!!!

Ugggh. I've phoned every pharmacy and health food store in my county- no gentian violet. One pharmacist said they stopped carrying it because it was linked to mouth cancer (WTF?)
I'm doing plain yogurt and the vinegar deal, but it's getting much worse. I guess I'll have to get some yucky Nystatin from the doc tomorrow.

if there is any chance you can get a "compounding" pharmacist to make you PLAIN nystatin powder that's the best form to use. You mix i with water right before applying. Otherwise the stuff they'll give you is a sweet pink liquid - and is often (but not always) too weak to make the thrush go away permanently.

The mouth cancer thing is true - but obviously it all has to do with dose and length of exposure. My understanding is that at the dosage and for the amount of time it is used in thrush treatment there is no concern. . .

We went through about two months of thrush this winter - here is one of my posts with some responses to it:

I ended us using diflucan (I took it) and that put an end to it. I got sick of having a purple baby! Though I got really good at applying the bare minimum of GV so that it created the least amount of staining.

Gentian viloet is great for it. You can also try colloidal silver, take the adult dose yourself and put the infant dose on Jonahs tongue, or on your nipples. And I suggest trying BIO K liquid probiotics and take it yourself and give Jonah some on the tongue

You can wash your nipples in water/vinegar solution vinegar between nursing and you can find gentian violet at natural food stores. It is a very dark purple liquid that cures thrush pretty fast. You can dab some on his tongue or you can paint your nipples with it and let him nurse. Be warned though that it makes your kid look like they got into a mess of blackberries & the stuff stains something fierce but it works really well & fast. Another thing that helps is to feed him yogurt. Good luck mama.
