anybody with a front loading washer?

Submitted by huck on Fri, 08/08/2008 - 4:25pm.

we bought a used front loader months ago. it is really sweet and small, fitting in our small apartment nicely. the issue lately has been that a small amount of water is always puddled in the rubber seal. we cant seem to figure out how to get rid of it. it has created some nasty mold. now everything has a mold smell when it comes out of the washer. fortunately the hanging them to dry makes them smell good again, but i am so ready for this problem to be solved
thanks mamas

we have one and it does the same thing. i scrub it out about once a month and just try to dab up the pooled water whenever i remember.

This was the common flaw that many FL had. Before I bought mine I did the research (my old washer was 22 years old LOL).

Anyway, the newer ones has drains in the section low enought to drain out the excess water.
I would do a light bleach wipe down after each of the next few loads. After that, always make sure you leave the door to the washer open to vent when not using (as long as it's safe with kids/animals). I'd toss a paper towel in there to after each load.

Sorry it's adesign flaw, but FL's ROCK!!

suggestions: scrub it out with vinegar (or bleach) and a toothbrush (ew)
run a vinegar or bleach load with hot water to rinse it away and leave it open so it can dry out in there after washes (if you can)

has a front-loader with the same problem, and it's NAS-TY. the whole laundry room reeks of mold, not to mention most of the loads of laundry i do. i always wonder if there's some kind of anti-fungal coating that you could paint over the rubber to stop shit from growing there, but i'm not sure. if you figure it out, let me know! i'd be a frigging hero at work if i could solve their moldy laundry problems....
