Mamas who don't vax (per Amanda Peet) are parasites.

and thought she came off as lame in a lot of ways -- in fact. the fact that the magazine wrote an entire article on this vapid, self-absorbed, entitled chick made me think less of them.

So I guess it goes without saying that I won't be taking her learned, sage medical advice anytime soon.

One could argue the opposite, that those who are vaccinated could pass on a serious illness to a child who is not vaccinated. Right? This is from http://www.thinktwice.com

" Recently vaccinated children do carry the disease germ and are able to spread it to other children. Many so-called epidemics are initiated and spread in this manner, even though the unvaccinated are blamed. On the other hand, a passive immunity to the disease may also be gained in this manner. In fact, some "authorities" argue that parents who do not vaccinate their children reap the benefits without taking the risks -- a curious argument since they also argue that such parents are irresponsible by unnecessarily exposing their children to greater risk by choosing not to vaccinate."

what's her point? I don't see the parasitic reference, I get the debate, but how does it relate?

her point was parents who do not vaccinate are paracites because they
suck the immunity benefits from the kids who are vaccinated. In other words, if you send your kid to a school (or live in an area) where most are vaccinated, then the chances of your kid catching anything is low.

"There is a generally held concept that mass vaccine programs were largely responsible for control of former epidemic diseases, but with the probable exception of the polio vaccine, in most instances this was not the case. From 1911 to 1935 the 4 leading causes of death among those aged 1 to 14 years, covered by Metropolitan Life Insurance policies, were diphtheria, measles, scarlet fever and whooping cough.11

However, by 1945 the combined rates from these 4 diseases had declined by 95%, before mass vaccine program began in the United States .12 By far the greatest factors in the decline were better housing with less crowded conditions, better nutrition, and other public health, hygienic, and medical measures. That's some... interesting logic there.

People throw herd immunity at me all of the time. I don't care. You vaccinated your kid for your own reasons, any benefits I get from that are coincidence. *shrug* I lllllllove being called a parasite, though. Makes me feel good.
