Just when you thought it was safe to put down the lanolin...

Submitted by BeforeDreaming on Sun, 07/27/2008 - 1:10pm.

Jonah has started biting my boobs.
He doesn't have teeth yet, so it's not THAT bad, but eeek my nipples are sore. The worst part of it is that I can't even use the traditional "Say ouch loudly and pop him off" advice because he bites as he's popping himself off. He kind of clamps down and pulls hard, then pulls off. It's really strange.
I'm wondering if this is a teething thing or maybe just a bad habit he's gotten himself into. I still yell "ouch" as he's dong it, he smiles and sometimes he growls back.
Neither of my older kids had ever bitten while nursing, so this is new territory for me. The lanolin helps, but I was wondering if anyone had any other helpful hints.
THANKS! (and my nipples thank you, too)

Usually if she thinks I'm not paying enough attention to the nursing process...since she's so focused and all...NOT. She likes to do yoga while nursing. Downard dog is her favorite. Bah.

I've noticed that she usually gets a look in her eye before she's going to do it on purpose. That sparkle-eyed mischevious look, at which point I give her the serious "I wouldn't do that if I were you" look. If she does, I say ouch loudly and we're done nursing for a few minutes, at least. It's not a game if unwanted results occur. Natural consequences, man. It seems to be working. Now if she'd just friggin' lay still while nursing.

monkeygirl started getting way squirmy while nursing when she was about 14 months old. it was one of the first signs that she was beginning to wean herself. is H staying latched on while she does her "yoga" Smiling or is she stopping? who knows, she may be getting bored with the boob! i stopped nursing in february when monkeygirl was 15 months old and it was just never an issue for us; we never looked back. well, i looked back and realized it was a sign she needed me less, but she didn't look back at all!!

Heya, A.

She stays latched on, for the most part, at least for a while. Then she starts turning her head and such. I think she may be cutting short the after-work nursing, but she gets hecka fussy if I postpone it or something. Bah. Maybe she just needs a one-minute quicky at that point and then the nightime nurse. *sigh* I would be okay with weaning, but I don't think she'll be able to go to sleep without nursing until she's at least...six. Seriously. She just WILL NOT SETTLE DOWN enough, so she just winds herself up into a ball of frazzled energy and nerves and then crashes out. *sigh* Wonder where she gets THAT from.......

push his face into your breast when he starts to clamp down (suffocating him a little) and he will open his mouth right away. I had to do this twice with my older daughter and she stopped. #2 hasn't started it yet, luckily.

It's kind of mean, but you can always pinch his nose shut to make him stop. It works in a pavlovian kind of way.

monkeygirl used do do that-- right before she'd pop off, she'd stretch my nipple like 3 inches and bite down. her gums would leave a kind of 'rugburn' on my poor, raw nips. they used to crack and bleed.... awful and painful. i tried to use those little plastic nipple caps ( i can't think of what they're called...?) to reduce the friction, but she wanted nothing to do with them. she'd go to latch on and spit my nipple out like "wtF is THAT?" so i just had to wait it out until she got through that phase... i think it lasted maybe a month/6 wks and then she got tired of the stretching/gnawing game. in the meantime, soothies (those mushy gel pads you put in your bra) helped between nursing sessions. if you're cracking/bleeding, air is the best thing. hang out topless so your abused nips can heal.... good luck, mama, i hope he cuts the shit soon!
