crafty ideas for 11-12 year old kids- pleeeeeaaaaseee help

Submitted by motormouth on Sat, 07/19/2008 - 8:57am.

So you know i am working this day camp for kids, and it's the first year that i am doing it. And everyday we have one hour of crafts time. We have done some really cool stuff. THe most recent was celebrity masks to do celebrity interviews while we were working on question words and grammar.
Check it out:
pol's celebrity mask
(thanks to conan o'brien for the idea)
alba's celebrity mask
and here you can see the ¨freaky families¨that they made in the background.
Here is a list of other things we have done:
collage- making freaky families- and decorating their notebooks- designing costumes for a film
Sculpting- making clay pencil toppers
cooking- making pancakes
paper crafts- paper animals
making poi and practicing spinning them
Here is a list of things that i have in mind for them:
a page in one of those pop up books where parts of the image move (present continuous)
a frame for a baby picture of them (past simple: was/were)
A dream catcher (past simple regular and irregular verbs)
Which leaves me short about 3 activities, and down to the dregs on ideas. my grammar areas will be past continuous, and present perfect (if that helps at all)
HHHHHEEEELLLLPPPPPP!

This has been a new hobby in our house, and pretty simply done if you want it to be!

We followed this tutorial pretty closely:

and we had great results.

You could do record bowls...not sure how to tie it in with your grammar lesson but you're smart, you could figure it out! Smiling

And if you come through catalunya on the way you can stay at my house. We've got two bedrooms with guest beds and we are totally kid friendly.

if 12 year olds would think this is stupid, but the kids i nanny for (ages3-10) loooove shrinky dinks. you can buy blank sheets of the plasticky stuff so they can do their own drawings, and then you can make keychains, bracelets, whatever they want out of the shrunken drawings. although you may have been looking for suggestions that don't require spending $ on supplies....

It is so difficult to think of the ideas because you do get kind of caught up in whether they will think it is stupid or not.
I think the secret is a) give them some kind of creative control in what/how they are doing it and b) present the activity with lots of humour and enthusiasm. And then it is surprising how little they think is stupid (or maybe they just don't let on how stupid they think it is because they see me all geeking out on it).
I have no clue where i could find shrinky dinks here, spain is conspicuously void of hobby lobbies and other craftsy shops!
But thanks for the suggestion:-)

i completely failed to realize that you are in spain! if you go to shrinkydinks.com/ you'll find a section where you can buy the sheets of plain plastic at geotoys. the price isn't too bad, $5.00 for ten 8x10 sheets, but i don't know if they'll ship to europe. good luck if you decide to go for it-- i bet those kids have never seen shrinky dinks before and would think it was really cool!

I have no idea either, but I have been thinking about this all day. I have a 12 year old, but he went out to a blueberry farm to pick berries for the day, or I would ask him for some suggestions. I thought the poi idea was awsome. Totally gonna do that with the kids here.
I'll try to get back to you ASAP!
