- sounds wonderful. I am just considering rabbits. But not for pets but for eating... Yes, they are sweet. And yummy, too. In my opinion. But chicken would be nice, too. I love sitting and watching them. And I love how they run.

Almost Zen like movements.
I'm at a point now where my menagerie has to be utilitarian in addition to *pets*.

Cats kill our rats which in turn keep rattlesnakes (somewhat) away

Dog watches our property

Chcikens provide eggs (well, not much so far Eye-wink )

Fish...wel, I got nothing on the fish.

DH and kids want chickens SO bad, I said they have to wait until Fra can dress himself as I cannot care for ONE MORE LIVING THING right now. Smiling

Mummy's alright, Daddy's alright, they just seem a little weird...

Ha! Love it! Well, not that it dropped, but ya know.
And I can't wait to have chickens! When we move my mom and I are getting some. The coop is already set up from when my SIL had hers there when they lived next door. Hmm, I need to read up on it, though. But my mom knows all about it, so I'll have a good guide. What kind do you have?

pardon my ignorance, but i thought you couldn;t have eggs without roosters? or do hens just make eggs as a matter of course? or is it if you want baby chicks then you need a rooster to fertilize one of the eggs. otherwise eggs like the one you got there are just regular edible unfertilized eggs? thanks for clearing this up....

Submitted by Catmama on Fri, 07/04/2008 - 6:42pm.

A rooster will fertilize the eggs, so if you let them be, they would hatch. If you don't want baby chicks (or a rooster) you get unfertile eggs. We do not want a rooster due to the amount of small kids I have over and they can be over protective of their flock (which is actaully their job). So, we passed on the male. However, I may get one later on when kids are big.
The roosters are so beautiful and i love a crowing roo in the am.

Sweet, thanks for the link! I can't remember what kind my SIL has, but she just got some of the ones with the froofy feathers on top of thier head. I haven't seen them yet, but she said they are going to try and hatch some so we can have some of the biddies (sp?). I never thought I'd be raising chickens, ha!

Awww! This post made me smile. She is getting growing up so fast!! I really want to get chickens, but we can't have any where we currently live (one reason why I want to move). All in due time, I suppose. Smiling Thanks for posting! "Life may not be the party we hoped for but while we're here we might as well dance".- Maya Angelou

were so easy and low maintenence. Seriously, even though mine free range during the day a a couple acres, you really need minimal space. A small garden and an enclosed rabbit hutch would do it. Just, maybe pass on any roos.

I'm so jealous! I want chickens so badly but right now we just can not do it. I love fresh eggs, there really is not much better than a fresh egg, buttered toast and hot coffee. And, geez, M is looking so much like a little lady! She is gorgeous, Catmama. Good luck and I hope you get some more huevos!
