They need

some space, maybe something to burrow in too, like a play tent or a corner you partially block off with a bookshelf or something.

A purse, or a bucket or a lunchbox or backpack. Something to pack their treasures in and carry.

unlimited food

unlimited love

books

rainboots. Even if you live in the desert.

Consistency.

Discipline - meaning "to teach".

Space - to be who they are, to work through their emotions, to assert themselves in a safe way.

some routine, some greenery (or at least fresh air), some love and a shit-load of patience.

buttloads of patience necessary! i've been trying so hard to stay calm with monkeygirl but she's starting to have tantrums about EVERYTHING and it's a wee bit frustrating....for both of us!

which if you know Ike, amounts to deathly ill. I think he will be okay. He spread the wealth and yakked in daddy's armpit before Tom could fully wake up. Mwahahahaha!

and I'm unrepentant - the worst kind of lurker.

But as I watch the toddler time of so soon coming to a close I can't help but comment.

You know, no one in Berkeley thinks a boy with a baby doll is remarkable but you should see the heads turn in Pittsburg, PA.

We are house bound since it is over 110 every day now and we are going CRAZY! It is even too hot to go places and get in and out of the car.
I have been thinking a lot about what he needs to be happy and engaged right now. He is used to being outside for most of the day and we are able to get out for a bit first thing in the morning and then go to the neighbours for swimming before dinner most days.
Yesterday his new kitchen ware and pretend food came so we have been cooking and eating all morning but I still need to do laundry and clean house. Right now he is hanging on my arm trying to get me to play with him some more. *Sigh* I just worked up a huge sweat just vacuuming and do not want a hot toddler hanging on me.
Unfortunately I am trying to keep him busy by upgrading the toys we have since he has been developing by leaps and bounds lately.
I just rambled and offered nothing.

I guess it's like how winter's are here . . . only at least you can bundle them up in the winter. So maybe what your toddler needs is a personal-portable-sprinkler system (a PPSS) to play outside with. You could make a fortune selling that kind of thing, all you need to do is convince southern mamas that the PPSS is actually important toddler safety gear and if they don't immediately add it to their baby shower registry they are an irresponsible future mother unworthy of joining the rest of the play group at the pool.

Sorry, I'm rambling . . .

*a loving and supportive environment
*boundaries
*healthy food
*time and space to move
*seeds to grow their intelligence

lately i have been feeling like a slacker mom. i am working 4-5 nights a week, staying up till 2am most nights. our mornings at home are lazy. there is nothing forcing us to motivate. nothing forcing us to get dressed even (my girls are so often naked.) when i do pull us all together, i have to stop many times throughout the day to breastfeed the 3 month old. i wonder if i am giving the big girls enough, but i know they are happy and healthy. they are self directed and play together all day long, so i think they are fine. supermom might be teaching them more about the alphabet or counting, but supermom i am not.

No such thing as supermom, huck. Maybe Dick and Jane know their alphabet, but they don't know how to play freely, think for themselves, or know what amazing things can come from boredom. You are a super, fantastic mama!
