Another useless baby gadget???

Submitted by bleu7102 on Wed, 06/25/2008 - 3:35pm.

So, there is a girl at work who is due next month, and her dept. sent out an invite to baby shower lunch for her. They included links to her registries, and this thing was on both of them, http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3039774&fromRegistryN... . Now, I just had a baby a year ago, and I've never seen this thing, so I had no clue what it was. It looks kinda useless to me, thought I'd throw it out there and see what you guys thought.

Okay I actually read through the reviews and functions and actually know someone that would use it. She has an accountants brain and keeps track of everything, when her DS fell asleep, how long he slept for when he ate last etc... Me, I could not tell you what time he got out of bed this morning.
I should tell you that she is an amazing mom, not stepford at all, she just has to keep track of EVERYTHING and I think that is what this device is for. A lot of the reviewers say that they use it with other caretakers and that makes sense, everyone knows when the baby ate last and if he has had a nap. The description was just really written poorly giving you the idea that it was basically an alarm to remind you that you have to take care of your baby.

I'm not questioning anyone's parenting abilities here. I'm surely not saying a parent who uses this would not be an amazing parent.
I am saying I think it's a bit ridiculous to shell out the bucks on this weird timer/tracker thing. I realize it keeps track as well as "alarms" you. But if my caretaker couldn't tell me the last time they fed or changed my baby just from memory, I'll be looking for a new caretaker. My daycare uses a pen and paper, seems to be working just fine.
I don't know, this thing really rubs me the wrong way. Like someone else said, it seems to be for the people who have it all and just need to spend their money on something for sake of it. Eh, dont' like.

I agree with you, I can just see how people can justify buying one. Lol - I guess you feel more passionatly about not liking it than I feel about trying to give anyone the benefit of the doubt.
I would not want one and certainly would never give one as a gift.

Sorry mama, didn't mean to come off as strongly as I did. I guess my main beef isn't with the people themselves who buy this stuff, but the fact it even exists! But, there are a million useless gadgets out there, guess I should get used to it Sticking out tongue

I can see that... That would be really useful for a baby that has a health issue or lots of caregivers.

I tracked everything too because we kept getting referred to specialists and dieticians and crap. I... wrote things down. With a pen. And paper. But this device could have made it all a bit easier, I guess?

Weird, I kept track of my son's feedings, too, and wouldn't you know it, I had the same hi-tech gear you did! We must shop at the same store.

My "baby care timer" sounded like a car alarm going off...inside my head. And it had a cuter design too.

I think we can chalk this product up to terrified new parent syndrome.

You should tell her that babies all come with this special, customized, internal alarm system that carefully monitors all of the babies needs 24/7 and when something needs to be done, this "alarm system" will emit a high pitched shrieking noise.

As for the registering thing... eh. My mom came with me to do mine, and she hadn't taken care of a baby since I was a baby, I think she didn't know what the hell she was doing either. She told me what I needed - I didn't know what a lot of it even was and I still don't. I also didn't get all that crap that I didn't know how to use...

*Snicker* That's pretty much what I thought. Thank goodness it's not someone I know well or that's what I would have said out loud.

Yeah, I totally noticed that! They are all like "I couldn't live without this!!" Really? So mothers who don't use this are just flailing around like idiots who just don't know what the hell is going on and their babies are just lucky to survive until they remember to feed them???
Give me a break. How out of touch can we be with our babies and our own instincts? Ugh.

Out of touch...

I didn't read the reviews but my husband did. He said there's apparently a left-right button or something that reminds you which boob to use at the next feeding. And I'll admit that I know crap all just yet about breastfeeding and that you might forget which boob you used the last time...but...but...can't you figure that out without a machine telling you?! I mean, it's not that hard, right? Otherwise most of the human population wouldn't be here!!!

seems redundant to me. YOu don't need a baby care timer. YOur baby comes with one built in.

Exactly! Since when do we need to start timing a newborn's naps? And diaper changes? Ummm, change them when they are wet or dirty.
I will say that we kept DS on a pretty set feeding schedule like he was on in the NICU, but he was only 4 1/2 lbs., so that was pretty important. But a clock was sufficient enough to keep track of this. And if it wasn't, he would let us know!!

but the timer for changing your diaper didn't go off yet so you're just going to have to wait!
