but here goes. What exactly is hummus (sp?)? I've never eaten it and the look of it scares me! But I'm willing to try maybe. Do you eat it cold, cause I'm not down with cold food (I know, completely weird), can you eat it warm? Why am I the only person on earth who doesn't know what it is?!!? Help me, mamas Puzzled

you don't like cold foods?!? what about, like, dips and stuff? cause that's what hummus is for-- dippin'! i use it as a spread on sandwiches, too. my fave summer sandwich: red pepper hummus and taboule on a whole grain bagel with cheddar cheese and mesclun greens. YUMMERS.

I know it's to dip, but hey, who says dips have to be cold only?! Smiling I admit, my cold food aversion is strange, but I can't help it. Basically, I like things that are supposed to be hot, super hot. And things that are supposed to be cold, super cold. Like, a glass of milk, cannot do that room temp, blech! Has to be ice cold, yumm! I don't like sandwiches much, cause the meat is cold. I'll only do like hot, toasted subs, that kind of deal. From reading the hummus recipes they actually sound like they would be yummy warm (to me).
I also don't like any condiments, except for bbq sauce. I have no clue where all my weird food quirks came from, I grew up in a family who ate everything. I've always been the picky one!

OMG! Are you kidding me?! That's all hummus is?!?! I'm floored, ha! I don't know what I thought it was exactly, I supposed I was thinking something a bit more....exotic maybe.
Thanks for that link Azblue, great info! And I've basically made black bean hummus and didn't even know it!! We LOVE black beans. Well, I will definitely have to give it a try now! Though I will have to warm it a bit, cold dips and stuff make me ill, ugh. But warm I can do.

Thanks guys!

Garbanzo beans (chickpeas) pureed with garlic, olive oil, tahini (sesame seed paste)- it's quite yummy. It's usually cold, but you can have it warm- not really hot. It's good with veggies, crackers, warm pita bread, on sandwiches. This is making me hungry.

but I like it cold. It's dip (kinda sorta) made with chickpeas. When I was a meat eater I used to eat chicken dipped in hummus all the time (my main picnic meal) now I love it with melba toast

it is a dip made of pureed chickpeas and sesame seeds with garlic and lemon, or at least that's how I make it. it goes well with stiff breads (pitas or crackers), veggies, or chips. I try to eat it at least once a week! you can serve it warm but it is typically served cold or room temp.

if you like chickpeas, you'll love hummus!

DS has been eating hummus since he could gum food, everyone in our house loves it with veggies and crackers. Also makes a great veggie sandwich spread or we use it it mini pitas with spinach leaves and shredded carrots for lunch.
