Nothing like the book.........

Has anyone else read The Other Boelyn Girl and seen the movie too? Now, I understand that it's usually necessary to cut some (or alot) of things out for time's sake, or change a few plot points around, etc. But damn, I don't think I've ever seen a movie that's based on a book be sooo different from said book. They actually changed whole character personalities. It felt really rushed, which I guess it was, and I think someone who has not read the book would be able to tell that there was A LOT missing from the story. I think the thing that irks me the most is completely changing the characters, well, character. For instance, Mary and Anne's mother in the book is a very cold, distant, uncaring woman, she shows no concern for her children and what happens to them. In the movie she doesn't want to use them as pawns to advance her family and she's pissed off with thier father and uncle for doing this. In the book, she's right in the middle of it. Why the need to change that?

Ugh, sorry, just totally needed to rant. The movie might have been fine without reading the book first, as is usual. Just wanted to see if any other mamas had seen it.

My book club and i went on a 'field trip' to see it since we read the book a couple of years ago. I went into it knowing that they'd change some things but the thing that did stick out to me was the Mother. Oh well. I enjoyed the book. I enjoyed the movie. I'd go crazy trying to compare.

I just read that book and by the end hated everyone in it BUT I still considered reading the Boleyn Inheritance, ha!

Haha, you mean you don't like it when men use thier daughters/nieces as pieces of meat to climb thier way up the social ladder? You prude.

I want to read the Boleyn Inheritance, just haven't picked it up yet. I looked at the author's other books but none of them excited me much. But now I feel invested in this story!

And I really liked it even though it's a little more.... "trashy romance novel" than I normally go for. I love historical fiction, but I love real history even more.

I haven't seen the movie; though I saw the previews before I read the book and as I was reading it; I thought it seemed like there were discrepancies and wondered if I was just out looking for them.

Is the movie worth sitting through if you don't actually pay to see it? I've got netflix. I think that movie is in my queue.

Awww, I don't think it was trashy romance at all!!! Man, don't tell me that, I HATE trashy romance novels, surely I didn't read one!!! Eye-wink

Hmmm, I think if you enjoyed the book you might get pissed off at the movie. But then again, you may not care as much as me. The movie itself is fine, but it's hard to separate the two of course. I really like Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johanssan is okay, so I wanted to see it anyways, but it still pissed me off!

And I can't remember if I read the book (haha). I think I saw a preview of the movie and there were such discrepancies from history I was a little irked. Mary was mistress to the King long before Anne came back from France and captured him.
Bah!
Will probably rent The Other Boleyn Girl.

Bah exactly!! Yes, in the book Mary doesn't officially become his mistress until Anne returns from France, but not long after. In the movie they completely changed the whole timeline. Anne doesn't go to France until after Mary even gets married! In the movie she was actually sent to France after they played her to the king and she screwed it up, so they exiled her and threw Mary in there. Completely changes the whole tone of the story. And the seduction of both Mary and Anne were quite lengthy in the book. In the movie, there was basically NO seduction of Mary, they met and spent literally 30 minutes together and then he ordered her to come to the palace and that's that. It was a much more of a love story in the book.
I could go on and on with the differences. Like I said, I realize that most movies are different from the books, but this one just changed the whole tone of the story and I don't know what the purpose of that was.
