I'm in Portland, OR today, home of unseasonably warm weather, a consulting project I'm working on for the PBS Kids show "Curious George", and my cousin B. and her two adorable sons, O. and T. We all met up today by the river for the Obama rally, and I got to see Barack deliver a stump speech in person, which definitely beat out seeing it on YouTube (except for the fact that on YouTube, you don't have to listen to a mix-tape of bad 90's alternative hip-hop before hearing the talk. I never realized how much I HAVEN'T missed the oeuvre of Arrested Development). My little cousins were dressed in Obama t-shirts they made at home ("Tell Your Mamma to Vote for Obama") and after they patiently sat through the rally, we went out for ice cream, where they ran into one of their friends from school. They younger boy, T. was having a nice little chat with his friend Sophie at a table while the grown ups discussed plans for the remainder of the day. When we tuned in to what the boy was saying, it turned out to be this:
"So, Sophie. Are you going to vote for Obama?"
Sophie nodded. "Yeah, I think so."
"Now, you ask me," T. said.
"Okay. T. Are you going to vote for Obama?"
"Yes. For sure." He smiled to lick his ice cream. "You have to make sure your mom and dad vote for Obama too."
And they say our youth is not politically engaged.
Was anyone else at the rally? What did you think? I especially like that he's added a call for Universal Pre-School to his speech, my own pet issue.

He said early on he thought it would be cool for a woman to be president. He knows I support Obama, but he is sticking with Hillary as long as she is in the race, I guess!
