Slings

Submitted by lana on Fri, 05/09/2008 - 5:08am.

I have a question - I'm going to my best friend's baby shower next weekend and was thinking of getting her a sling. I had one, but never really liked it. I preferred the snuglie type thing. I think she asked for a maya wrap, but that's what I had and I never found it very comfortable. But maybe that was just me. Any suggestions on what kind to get? Thanks!

that or the new native. I make a new native knock off for every new mama I meet. The new native is great!!

pretty much anyone. I had a Maya wrap that I loved, but would never recommend them. It took me about 2 weeks of trying to do it everyday before I finally got it. The Ergo is a pretty instantaneous thing to pick up and it's versatile in that you can wear the baby front or back. It's not so good for the littler babies, but for the long term, I think it's an excellent gift.

i didn't love the slings either; i always felt like the baby was getting smooshed/suffocated. i liked the standard front carrier, but everyone's different. i would just get her the one she asked for (with the receipt in case she changes her mind.) or, i know it's kind of lame, but when in doubt gift cards are always good. she can get exactly what she wants, whenever she figures out what that is! maybe give her a homemade coupon redeemable for a day of babysitting, too; i bet that would be a hit!

i have a bunch. right now we have been using the ergo for pait, but she's 2. she loves it and nick can get it on all by himself suer easy.
when she was little though, we used a cuddly wrap (which we'll use for lief too). it's just a long (22ft) piece of fabric. its kind of t-shirt material, which i find a bit too stretchy. but we still love that wrap. we were able to use it until she was probably 18months or so.

I bought a Moby wrap and never looked back. It's fabulous from birth to about 35lbs (though who'd want to carry that much around is beyond me). I can't rave enough about it - I think every mama should have one. It's like the maya, but without that ring thing, and it's only got a few basic ways to wrap it around yourself and your baby, but I've only used one and my wee man is 9 mos. You can also sew your own if you're handy like that. Good luck.

If I had it to do over I'd just get the Ergo and can the rest.

The one I used the most was one I made myself, don't know what style it is though. There is a great book called Babygami, and it has all styles of wraps and slings, from infancy to toddler. Mine was soooo super easy, it's literally just a few yards of fabric folded and tied. The baby just fits in the pouch all nice and comfy.

I never liked my maya wrap either (I'm long torsoed, which I think is part of it, but I also never had the patience to learn it).
I love my "kangaroo corner" sling- I still use it for my 18 month old to keep my hands free, and it's very easy to learn. There's a store now here in town that has a free sling class that will teach you how to use the different slings- I wonder if there's something around where you live that would do that for your friend.

I second the Kangaroo Korner fleece pouch sling. I still use it (I have an Ergo, too) and will continue to use it as along as possible. It's so comfortable and easy. The baby never gets "lost."

and am getting the hang of it, we have two different holding positions down pat.
Mine came with a free instructional DVD I don't want...(easier for me just to find pictures on the internet of different ways to wear)...PM me if you want it and I will gladly mail it to you!

and the wrap sling but I like the Mei Tai/ ABC sling best!

It's the easiest to manage, the easiest on my back and doesn't take up too much room.
