Teething necklaces

Submitted by BeforeDreaming on Thu, 04/17/2008 - 3:35pm.

Jonah hasn't started teething yet, but I want to be ready.
Has anyone used an amber teething necklace? Many of the hip, natural, yoga mamas in my area use them. I posted about them on another mothering message board and was reprimanded for even hinting at them.
I am aware that they pose a hazard because they go around a childs neck. However, most are made with magnetic clasps for easy breakage and are taken off while the child is sleeping. The beads are knotted individually so if the necklace somehow breaks, the beads stay put.
I would imagine they require a certain degree of mindfulness/vigilance. But, if they alleviate teething pain, it might be worth looking into.
Any thoughts?

...Sounds pretty cool though. I'm sorry you got reprimanded. I wonder what that's like to wake up in the morning with all the answers on how to raise everyone else's kids...

I wouldn't be too worried about choking, they sound pretty safe. Try it and let us know how it goes!

but i did want to with pait. i dont think there is a high risk of choking, they're not long and i remember being around pait all the time when she was that little.
i haven't heard any bad things about them. but if your worried, i'm sure the mama necklace would also help.

funny, i was just on the craigslist pet pages, it's much the same thing. people asking about boarding and pet sitting a sick animal so they can go back to work are told that they shuold lose their jobs for being heartless. idiots. some people have little influence in their in-person lives, so they try to have it online.

but i wouldn't do the necklace, personally. i'd be too afraid of choking. if i were interested in getting my kid some amber for it's anti inflammatory properties, i'd find some other way to do it, like a bracelet or a large piece of amber or something. i would also get a chunk of amber to wear on my own necklace, because you know how babies can NOT keep your necklaces out of their mouths.

I'd never heard of them before, but when I think about it I am pretty sure I've seen them on kids at playgroup. I think they look cool and it there's some anecdotal evidence saying that they really do work.

I get so tired of all this mama-bashing, I can not believe you were "reprimanded" - we're all grown-ups, for fucks sake. If someone were to speak to me like that in real life I would tell them just where to stick their judgmental "concern".

(Up their ass, if you were wondering.)

But I'm ranting, and I love the necklaces, I say go for it!!!

so long supermom
