Western MA mamas

Submitted by hollygolightly on Sun, 04/13/2008 - 12:55am.

I've never been to the western part of the state and dh and I were thinking about heading out there over Memorial Day weekend. Can you mamas recommend any good lodgings, kid friendly of course. Also, anything we must see? The only thing on our agenda is to go to a cheese shop in Great Barrington, so dh can write off the trip as a business expense. Thanks for the help in advance.

I live in GB! Let's meet up... I work at the co-op that is around the corner from the cheese shop. There are plenty of small motels around that are reasonablish in price. Let me know if you wanna stay in GB or a town nearby and I will give you some suggestions.

Places to go with kids (though, I'm not sure how old your kids are):
- there is the eric carle museum in northampton (a great place to go in general) http://www.picturebookart.org/. I haven't been here yet, but keep meaning to take my kids.
- MassMOCA in North Adams if you are into modern art at all http://www.massmoca.org/
- the Berkshire museum in Pittsfield http://www.berkshiremuseum.org/. You might be able to visit Huck near here too. The museum itself isn't the most spectacular, but it is a good visit - especially the little aquarium on the bottom level
- Norman Rockwell museum in Stockbridge http://www.nrm.org/. There is a cool comic book exhibit here for another month. I have lived here for 11 yrs and just went here in the past month for the 1st time and I didn't take my kids... so not sure if this would interest you.
- nature hikes. there are lots of these all over the Berkshires, just let me know if you are interested in going on any and I will tell you where they are.
- playgrounds. same as the hikes.
- lakes. if it is nice enough, there is a lake in every town around here, however, the GB one might be the only pubic beach.

That's all I can think of, but hopefully that is helpful. PM me if I can answer anymore specifics for you. Have fun and hope to see you!

Thank you so much for this! It is so extensive! I effed up and realized I had the wrong weekend for Memorial Day but dh and I are still going to try and make a trip out there one weekend in May. In regards to staying somewhere, we're looking for mid range, not too yucky but not super duper posh, either. My kids are 2 and 3, so as you know, not the best age for a romantic B&B. We'd probably be kicked out. Thanks so much again, meeshel and I'd love to meet up with you at some point, even to pop in to say hi when you're working. The coop was actually a stop on our list, dh used to work for Whole Foods and loves markets. I'll keep you posted and thanks again, so much.
You must live, not simply exist.

my favorite place to bring the girls is Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival, but their season doesnt start till mid june. many evenings each week, they have free performances on the (absolutely gorgeous) outdoor stage. it is very informal, people bring picnics, kids are running and playing through the trees and climbing on the rocks... and world class dance.

and you could always come have dinner where i work.... the most kitchy and fun place in western mass... the Dream Away Lodge. seriously, it is a great destination and very family friendly.

I personally live next to a pond, have fun stream to play in and a big trampoline. So you could come here and hang out... if I can get a freakin day off...
