need some peanut free ideas for lunchboxes

Submitted by hollygolightly on Fri, 04/04/2008 - 12:12pm.

So the girls' new school is nut free and A and L are rather picky little creatures. If A could, she would eat a PB&J for every meal, so not having it as an option, is a big deal. A dislikes macncheese (I know, weirdo)and gags on lunchmeat. So, I need some ideas. I brainstormed with A and she came up with
cream cheese and jelly for her and hummus and mustard for L. The latter being L's fave sandwich, making it makes my stomach turn. I love each separately, but the combo of garlicky hummus with yellow mustard...ugh.Funny the things these little monsters will eat.
So, mamas, any ideas? Thanks in advance.

DD's school is also nut-free and while they don't actually bring their lunches, sometimes there is an event where you have to bring something.
SUNBUTTER! Yummy and nut-free. Here's a link to the one we buy:

Our store doesn't carry the organic kind, so we get the one called "natural." It has dehydrated cane juice and salt in it so it is actually kind of sweet (almost too sweet in my opinion.) I wish we could get one that didn't mess with a good thing by adding other crap...but...

Some lunches/snacks we make include:
a pumpkin muffin, some cheese, apple and carrot slices (this would be more Devon's snack than Callum's lunch-but throw in a hard boiled egg and you got lunch!)
leftover homemade pizza, some carrot and cuke slices, canned peaches
a lettuce, cheese and hummus/meat sandwich with some pretzels, apples slices and some broccoli
cream cheese and apple butter on a raisin bagel, rice crackers, apple sauce and a raw veg.

with the nut-free school, and we're vegetarians, and my dd is annoyingly picky, so it's good think she's not one for variety just yet-

today she has a mini quesadilla, chunks of avocado and red pepper, and some blackberries

a couple of Q*rn chickenless nuggets and apple slices - the ol' fall-back.

a yogurt, a triangle of wheat toast w/ butter, and grapes - if she didn't have yogurt at breakfast

curried yellow lentils with carrots and peas, and some pears or apple slices. - she LOVES this one. sometimes i just nuke the Ann*e's frozen indian meal that has the yellow dal and mix that up for her. easy peasy.

miso soup with rice, peas, and carrots mixed in, and some banana. (thankfully, she doesn't mind her soup at room-temp)

i think presentation helps. i bought this little bento box in chinatown, with cute kitties on it (think hello kitty chinese knock-off) and little separate compartments. since we started using that as her lunchbox, she rarely comes home with extra food.

i also don't send her with a juice box on purpose. her school serves water with the lunch, if nothing else is sent along. i know my kid tends to eat more when there's no juice or milk being offered with the meal.

i like cheese and mustard sandwiches too. i should do the hummous, my kid loves hummous. i also like these: http://www.sunrise-soya.com/petestofu.htm

but i almost always go with PB&J because dd complains when i switch it up. i also let her loose in the kitchen to pack her own lunch. she usually comes home very hungry on those days though.
