I think everyone else knew it already, but I have just discovered that Miyazaki is a genius. I had seen Spirited Away, and was impressed, and also saw Kiki's Delivery Service, which was kinda cute, but marred for me by the unremitting perkiness of the American girl who did the dub. But what really got me hooked was My Neighbor Totoro. What a wonderful movie! It is spell-binding in such a calm gentle way, and the story is lovely. Now I want to know which other ones I should rent. The things is, I pretty much crash at night when my little boys go to sleep, so I almost never have a chance to stay up and watch things I wouldn't want them to see (Big Bad Mama confession: they recently saw, um, the naked fight scene in Borat, oh dear), which means the movies I watch can't be too scary. My three year old liked My neighbor Totoro, but the two year old freaked out whenever the Totoro roared, so we have a pretty low scare threshold. I have seen the begining of Grave of the Fireflies, and know it's much too heavy to watch with the boys. How about Castle in the Sky and Porco Rosso? Has anyone seen these? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
