Hayao Miyazaki -- which of his movies are best for little kids?

I think everyone else knew it already, but I have just discovered that Miyazaki is a genius. I had seen Spirited Away, and was impressed, and also saw Kiki's Delivery Service, which was kinda cute, but marred for me by the unremitting perkiness of the American girl who did the dub. But what really got me hooked was My Neighbor Totoro. What a wonderful movie! It is spell-binding in such a calm gentle way, and the story is lovely. Now I want to know which other ones I should rent. The things is, I pretty much crash at night when my little boys go to sleep, so I almost never have a chance to stay up and watch things I wouldn't want them to see (Big Bad Mama confession: they recently saw, um, the naked fight scene in Borat, oh dear), which means the movies I watch can't be too scary. My three year old liked My neighbor Totoro, but the two year old freaked out whenever the Totoro roared, so we have a pretty low scare threshold. I have seen the begining of Grave of the Fireflies, and know it's much too heavy to watch with the boys. How about Castle in the Sky and Porco Rosso? Has anyone seen these? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

It's one of my favorites ever, but a little advanced for a 3yo. We liked Princess Mononoke better than Castle in the Sky--I think it'd probably be okay...there's dark aspects in all of his I've seen, though.

I saw that too. That's another one I'd consider too violent for the boys. I liked it, especially the first half, but I found Howl's role in the war confusing, maybe because it was very different from what he does in the book, which I read first and really loved. Anyone with the slightest interest in young adult fantasy should go check it out at once!

allowing mine see that scene in Borat, but my husband and mom intervened.

I think Kiki and Totoro are on the non-scary end - a lot of that stuff has some eerie parts. My favorite so far is Howl's Moving Castle (Christian Bale's voice - yum! plus other great voice talents). Princess Mononoke is good but almost too scary - even for adults! But my kids loved it.

I think it was Kirsten Dunst who was Kiki's annoying voice (we loved the cat by Phil Hartman). Check out my daughter in this costume my mom made her:

""but aside from those 2 things, everyday is 'steak and blowjob day' ummmm....minus the steak and blowjobs."

You have just made me really bitter, because I have no daughter to dress as Kiki.
I liked the cat, too, but I hadn't registered that Phil Hartman did the voice. That makes me want to watch it again. He was great -- the Simpsons lost a lot of its charm for me when he died.

silly two year olds. he loves spirited away, not even afraid of the river spirit. or the giant baby. haha. but he freaked out during totoro this. very. day.
i don't get it. he likes howl's moving castle too. i don't think there is much to hold kid's attention about castle in the sky or porco rosso. i mean, how old are your other kids? i have to remind myself that just cause it is animated, doen't mean it is for children. not that it is inappropriate, just that it is complex.

What a funny coincidence about Vinny. Oh man, that giant baby gave me the creeps! That right there is probably why I wasn't won over to Miyazaki right away. That and those three bouncing heads. But I think the part most likely to be upsetting would be No Face eating all the people and then barfing them up. Is Vinny OK with that? LOL.
I guess my title was misleading, because I really want to rent the movies for myself more than for the kids (who are two and three). In a way, it's even better if the stories don't hold their interest, cause I'd kind of rather if they drifted off to play with their toys instead of sitting with glazed eyes. I asked about those two because my local library has them, and I wanted to be warned if there were any graphically violent or scary images that would give the boys nightmares for life. I guess I can just turn them off if I have to.
