chicken pox freakout

Submitted by sylvia_p on Sun, 07/23/2006 - 4:55pm.

so today, my brother came over and was looking at DD, 5, and said, "does she have chicken pox?". i brought her over to me and pulled up her shirt and sure enough, i am 99% sure she's got chicken pox. what a wonderful mother i am that i hadn't noticed.
my major concern however is that the new baby may have contracted them as well. she's been fussy as all get out the past few days, but she had her one month checkup on wednesday, no fever and nothing unusual. i haven't noticed anything on her and i gave her a bath this morning.
i am flipping out that she is going to get them and everything i have read says that it is life threatening in infants. she's only 5 weeks old.

One at 6 months, and one at 9 months, and they were just fine, so I'm sure that even if she gets it, it will be okay.
You are a wonderful mother. You were probably doing other things, like keeping her out of the street and teaching her how to do some art project...or who knows...but, you can't concentrate on everything all the time!

I am no Dr., but I think your body will produce antibodies & the baby will get these via your milk (I seem to recall that you are breast-feeding). Babies are somewhat protected from such things if mama is bfing, she might just get a light case (if anything). Of course, call the dr.

We just went through this--though my baby is 7 mo and did get it--but everything I read/heard says that if you had chickenpox as a kid your baby will probably have your immunity. If you're breastfeeding, even more so. The incubation period is about 2 weeks, so even though she's already been exposed they recommend you try to limit exposure (yeah, right, I know). Can you call the pediatrician?
