Assertive communication mamas

Submitted by BeforeDreaming on Fri, 09/26/2008 - 2:55pm.

OK, I've really been struggling with this and I'm hoping that the wise mamas here can help me out. I'm looking for recommendations (books, podcasts, etc) on assertive communication.
It's kind of funny, because I'm perceived by friends and family as being very outspoken, but when I'n conversing with someone in a perceived position of power, I totally wimp out.--read more >>

Why I LOVE the laundromat

Submitted by BeforeDreaming on Wed, 09/17/2008 - 1:46pm.

Because, with out fail, my stained Luna Pad will migrate to the front of the dryer and press itself up against the glass. It happens no matter how many clothes I am drying, even if there is only one pad in the entire load.
This is a physics thing, I'm sure of it. The duration of time it spends pressed against the glass in all of it's blood-stained glory is directly proportional to the presence of a hot womyn folding her laundry within sight of my dryer.

Thrush

Submitted by BeforeDreaming on Sat, 08/30/2008 - 2:27pm.

Jonah has it and I have no experience to draw on. His doctor's office is closed for the weekend.
What now?
Is there anything I can pick up at the health food store?
I'm BFing, I assume I have to "treat" my boobs.
Thanks!!!

The Flip

Submitted by BeforeDreaming on Mon, 08/25/2008 - 2:46pm.

"The absolute yearning of one human body for another particular body and its indifference to substitutes is one of life's major mysteries." -Iris Murdoch

When the object of your desire- your date, husband, wife, lover, partner- walks into the room, does your stomach do a little flip? Does it need to?
I've been pondering this as I navigate through a series of banal dating experiences. I'm dating one womyn in particular who is so damn solid, so kind, so consistent. But, MY GODDESS, I don't want to fuck her AT ALL! Most days I don't even want her to hold my hand.--read more >>

Just when you thought it was safe to put down the lanolin...

Submitted by BeforeDreaming on Sun, 07/27/2008 - 1:10pm.

Jonah has started biting my boobs.
He doesn't have teeth yet, so it's not THAT bad, but eeek my nipples are sore. The worst part of it is that I can't even use the traditional "Say ouch loudly and pop him off" advice because he bites as he's popping himself off. He kind of clamps down and pulls hard, then pulls off. It's really strange.
I'm wondering if this is a teething thing or maybe just a bad habit he's gotten himself into. I still yell "ouch" as he's dong it, he smiles and sometimes he growls back.--read more >>

Welcome back, old friend

Submitted by BeforeDreaming on Sat, 06/07/2008 - 9:51pm.

I got my period today, for the first time, in like 15 months. I'm feeling kind of melancholy about it.
I'm not one of those womyn who despises her period. On the contrary, I like that I can bleed each month. It balances me out.
The arrival of this period signifies the end of something I can't quite put my finger on. Maybe just the process of conception, gestation, and birth. My baby is growing up. He is probably my last one.
So, bleeding marks the end of a cycle for me. I'm sad to see it go.

Anti co-sleeping campaign

So, does this mean only skinny, well-rested mamas should co-sleep?
If it were just a matter of alerting the public to safe co-sleeping practices (no drugs/ alcohol)I could understand it, but this makes it seem like all co-sleeping is dangerous.

Why is it...

Submitted by BeforeDreaming on Thu, 05/22/2008 - 12:29am.

... that of all of the lovely single folks in the world, I always manage to date the ones most likely to lie, manipulate, cheat, and generally behave in a pathologically psychotic way?
I'm so done.
That is all.

Mother's Day is balls (a bit ranty).

Submitted by BeforeDreaming on Sun, 05/11/2008 - 2:53pm.

What do I want for mother's day?
Cloth diapers and some sleep.
I'm so effing broke right now, I can't afford to buy another bag of these disposables. I applied for Miracle Diapers, but they're so backed up right now, it could be months. I want to go hiking with my kids today, but my older son is still asleep and I know he'd rather not venture out. --read more >>

Teething necklaces

Submitted by BeforeDreaming on Thu, 04/17/2008 - 3:35pm.

Jonah hasn't started teething yet, but I want to be ready.
Has anyone used an amber teething necklace? Many of the hip, natural, yoga mamas in my area use them. I posted about them on another mothering message board and was reprimanded for even hinting at them.
I am aware that they pose a hazard because they go around a childs neck. However, most are made with magnetic clasps for easy breakage and are taken off while the child is sleeping. The beads are knotted individually so if the necklace somehow breaks, the beads stay put. --read more >>

Childcare questions

Submitted by BeforeDreaming on Wed, 04/02/2008 - 4:47pm.

Hey mamas! I've been having such a struggle with deciding to return to work and finding decent and affordable childcare for J. After realizing that I'd be working to pay a sitter, I've decided to start watching other people's children in my home. I'm not looking for it to be a formal, licensed daycare, mainly just a few children/week drop-in, varying hours. I'd like to pick your brains on how this will work. --read more >>

Hip Click

Submitted by BeforeDreaming on Fri, 03/21/2008 - 1:55pm.

Since Jonah's first well check, the pediatrician has been noting a "click" in his left hip. I actually had him on my lap during the exam last week and felt a "clunk" when he pushed on J's legs. The ped doesn't seem too concerned and says we should just watch and wait at this point. I've read a bit about this on the web, but was wondering if any of you sage mamas has experiences with this. Thanks!

PM me.

Vaccines (I know, the dead horse)

Submitted by BeforeDreaming on Mon, 03/17/2008 - 12:48am.

So Jonah had his first round of vacs last month. He did fine with them as far as I can tell. He's due to go back Tuesday for his next set. For the past week I have had extreme anxiety, I mean a really visceral response to the thought of him getting the rest of his vacs. I'm not sure if its all of the info in the news lately or my mama sixth sense kicking in. I've read a lot of the info online, but what are your thoughts and experiences? How safe is it not to vac your kid?--read more >>

g Diapers -FREE!

Submitted by BeforeDreaming on Sat, 03/08/2008 - 2:55am.

I have a brand new starter set of g diapers. It includes 2 covers, 4 snap in liners, one package of flushable inserts and instruction booklet. They are size small. Jonah grew out of this size before I got it together enough to use them. First one to PM me gets 'em. I could mail them to you in the upcoming week.
