LOL Oh the irony!

Submitted by Velma on Mon, 12/15/2008 - 6:43am.

When my older son was little I let the f-bomb drop every once in awhile around him. Sometimes more. He said it once or twice, but never clearly enough for people to know what he was saying.

Years later, my older son really loves the phrase "What the fudge!?". He uses it a good deal, and gets quite a kick out of it. Seems fairly innocent, no? We, now my 3 year old says it. And guess what? It comes out sounding exactly like "What the fuck?!"

You can't say "You can't play"

Submitted by Velma on Mon, 12/15/2008 - 6:39am.

Some time ago on here a mama posted about a rule at their child's preschool about being inclusive in play and I ran across this online today that is very encouraging that these types of rules can be positive.

Butt Wipes Recipes Sought

Submitted by Velma on Fri, 06/27/2008 - 1:49pm.

We're trying to reduce the old footprint a little more and I'm wondering what's keeping your babies' butts clean. In this house we actually all use baby wipes for #2, so I think we can save a lot of trash this way.

I need to turn this around

Submitted by Velma on Mon, 06/09/2008 - 6:25am.

For the last 6 weeks/2 months or so, we've been having a tough time keeping it together/enjoying life/being kind/staying sane and happy. I'm not sure anymore exactly when it started or how, but basically the jist is that Simon will get his hands on/try something that doesn't agree with him and we'll spend a couple days with tantrums and not getting along plus being up most of the night. And then he gets a cold/diahrea/ear infection/eats another allergen and we stay crabby and sleep deprived. -- read more >>

'k. I've cursed enough about docs and insurance. Here's ten happies.

Submitted by Velma on Tue, 06/03/2008 - 5:38am.

1)Simon goes to sleep fairly regularly without the boob. He's also drinking lots of milk, vegetable juice and kombucha. I'm glad he's growing up.

2)Tony goes camping tomorrow with a school group.

3)We went out to an indoor playground tonight and I got myself some plastic-free hair-styling stuff.

4)Cleaning the house tomorrow. Hoping to exorcise the evil, crusty nast.

5)I got a 55% on my recent homework, and I couldn't care less. I know my shit in that class and I'll be outta there soon.

6)Food in the fridge.-- read more >>

Math Minded Mamas: Dating advisor sez

Submitted by Velma on Sat, 05/24/2008 - 3:17pm.

I was browsing a sad self-help book for dating/Finding Mr. Right (!) and it said:

"You will find exponentially more men outside your apartment than in it--so get out there!"

I had to snicker because it is so right on: 0 men in my "apartment" raised to any power equals exactly how many men I've found!

On dating

Submitted by Velma on Wed, 05/21/2008 - 8:17pm.

I was talking with Lucy Pinball a few weeks ago and I said that while I'm cool with being a single mama and had this lifestyle as a goal while growing up I wonder, if I ever wanted to partner, how it would even be possible to do so. Like, I don't know where to begin.

I have tried internet dating before and I wasn't real happy with that because basically you know squat about the person's deepest beliefs and by the time you are finding them out you are out there basically already declaring yourself on their side/liking them by dating. -- read more >>

Looking for puberty resources

Submitted by Velma on Wed, 05/21/2008 - 7:50pm.

I'm looking for resources, books, magazines, websites that explain male and female puberty for Tony. We've had many "talks" over the years, but I'd like to get him specific information about his body that I just don't know as well as specific information on puberty for girls. I'd especially like the resources to encourage respectful and proud ownership of these processes and how to be respectful of others going through the same stuff.

Happy Mothers Day and Updates on Us

Submitted by Velma on Sun, 05/11/2008 - 9:52pm.

Happy Mothers Day to you all. Ours is going well. We got out to a playground and are starting to build a fine stable of playgrounds for use this summer. Last summer we were so busy unpacking/settling in that we didn't get to explore Portland's summer activities that well, so this year it's like opening up a present. One place I really want to check out is Jamieson Park on the west side.-- read more >>

Can Tony have some help with his science project?

Submitted by Velma on Sat, 05/03/2008 - 8:39pm.

Please answer the following:

1)How many miles a month do you drive?

2)How many gallons of gas do you buy each time you fill up?

3)How often do you fill up?

4)Are there any public transportation options near you?

5)How much does gas cost in your area now?

6)Has this affected how much you drive?

7)How many car trips per day do you make?

Thank you so much!

1)This weather is so good it's unbelievable. What a great start to May. This morning when we first stepped out it smelled like a big turd had just taken off its shoes and then farted, but now it smells like spring flowers and sunshine.

2)I got some homework done. I love my statistics class. Where else can you find out the likelihood that out of a group of 70 potential jurors, 40 of whom are women, a jury of 12 with exactly 5 women is chosen? These are the types of things I think about and it's neat that it takes less than a minute on a calculator.-- read more >>

1)Got my PSU id card in the mail. This should be good for some discounts, and it's peace of mind for me because it was lost in the mail for awhile.

2)Tony had a friend sleep over this weekend and they had a good time.

3)Ani concert with mnemosyne was TOO awesome. So cool I almost passed out!

4)Simon's added some fun words to his vocabulary recently. My favorite is: Na-nee! = nasty-- read more >>

1) We may have found a camp for Tony this summer! The MJCC Day Camp offers a huge variety of camps and has a 1/2 day option that actually doesn't interfere with when I need to pick Simon up from daycare. There are lots of sports and arts that Tony's interested in and it is broken down into weekly sessions so it wouldn't be an all-or-nothing camp. It is trimet accessible. Hopefully there are spaces available.-- read more >>

Our Easter

Submitted by Velma on Mon, 03/24/2008 - 6:46pm.

We made eggs and Tony and Simon decorated them. We used the kit where you stick the eggs in containers with a few drops of color, shut the lid and shake. It was awesome until one of the containers popped open and spewed a blue egg across the room! Fortunately the other 11 eggs survived. We took turns hiding them around the house and giggling about all the wild places a person could stash an egg. Simon is a really good egg-spotter. He's a quick study.-- read more >>

Health stuff

Submitted by Velma on Wed, 03/19/2008 - 7:03pm.

One of my new years resolutions for 08 was to figure out what the fickety was going on with my eyes. The one on the right gets stuck shut at night and I've found some relief for this from eliminating hair care products or eye drops but not much. Looking around on line I turned up Sjogren's Syndrome which is a pretty bad condition that can dry a person out so I was worried for quite a while that I had this. I finally got it checked out and it turns out I don't have Sjogrens. I feel like celebrating because Sjogrens can damage your body.-- read more >>
